Five Variants for Recorder Quintet

There are no jazzy rhythms (not even a single crotchet triplet), and so I think that most players will find it easier than most of Steve'swork

Although the orchestral accompaniment varies in difficulty from quite easy to quite hard, what all of the pieces have in common is that the solo part is something of a challenge. Although a tricky solo part is only to be expected in a concerto, I wanted to break the mould and write a concerto where the solo part would be playable by a reasonable player, as opposed to a star! Then, with a straightforward orchestral accompaniment the piece would be within reach of a large number of ensembles. This three-movement, eight-minute concertino is the result, and it is dedicated to my wife Ann, who was the first soloist. Also available, MHE10415a is a version where the accompanying orchestra includes big basses, and MHE10415b is a version for treble recorder and piano.'

Four Madrigals from The Triumphs of Oriana

The Triumphs of Oriana was a collection of twenty-five madrigals, published by Thomas Morley in 1601, and composed by some of the finest English madrigalists of the age. Ann has arranged four from the set, by East, Norcombe, Mundy and Bennet. These pieces work well at various speeds, as demonstrated by the available recordings, but a typical total playing time is about nine minutes.

His many madrigals might seem a rich source of music for recorder players, but perhaps a snag is that, to get the best out of them, great flexibility is required in line with the words. I arranged these two pieces from Monteverdi’s second book of madrigals to use on the 2016 Rural Recorder Course, on which we studied the words carefully (in Italian, as well as in translation). Our objective was to get to a performance that at least hinted at the heart-on-sleeve drama of these forerunners of Italian opera. Quite a tall order for a few recorders, but I think we all learned a lot from the experience.'

Two Canzons

5 TTBGbCb. Ann says: Paul Peuerl (1570-1625) was a German composer, organist and organ builder; his musical output appears to have been exclusively instrumental. I arranged these canzons for some ‘easier’ eight-foot playing sessions. I think they work well at eight-foot, and they avoid the problem of using music at four-foot, when some players have to then read from unusual clefs. Total performance time is about five minutes.

Six Praetorius Dances

5 SATTB. Bransle Double - La Bourrée - Torch Bransle - La Volta - Bransle de Villages (I) - Bransle de Villages (II) . Michael Praetorius (1571–1621) was a prolific and versatile composer, and famous in his day. His only surviving secular music, however, is 'Terpsichore', a collection of over 300 dances. There is no shortage of arrangements for recorder of dances from Terpsichore, but there are not so many for the reasonably mellow combination of DTrTTB, and even fewer where time signatures stay as 3/4 or 4/4 (there is nothing in 6/2 in this collection!). As well as mastering the notes, please feel free to experiment with speeds. Remember these were all sprightly dances originally, so a bit of vigour (perhaps with some percussion) would not go amiss.

These pieces by Rosemary Robinson were inspired by the four movements of the typical Baroque Suite (Allemande, Courante, Sarabande and Gigue), and each one represents one of the four Elements (Water, Air, Earth and Fire). The suite as a whole is an evocation of that remote and beautiful part of Warwickshire once covered by the Forest of Arden. The dances are of moderate difficulty.
