Four Pieces from the Cancionero de Upsala

4 SATB. The Cancionero de Upsala is the single surviving copy of a book of Spanish music, which was printed in Venice in 1556. The book is now housed in the Uppsala (modern spelling) University Library in Sweden. We have chosen pieces which alternate between plaintive and beautiful and vigorous

Four Easy Pieces

Bach, J S

4 SATB. These are arrangements of rarities - easy pieces by Bach! There are two chorales (in other words hymns) and two songs from Anna Magdalena's notebook, originally for voice and keyboard. A very easy descant 2 part is provided, which should be omitted if all descants are able to play the descant 1 part (which is itself quite straightforward). Total playing time is about six minutes.

4 SATB. A chorus from the Christmas Cantata (BWV 63) is paired with the victorious celebration from the Michaelmas Cantata (BWV 149). Both are of Intermediate difficulty; an extra alto part, down an octave, is included.

Four Canzonas

Banchieri

4 S/A A/T TB. Fantasia Quinta - Fantasia Quinta Decima - Seconda Sonata, Fuga Autentica in Arie Francese - Fantasia Decimaottava. Adriano Banchieri was born and died in Bologna. He played an important part in development of the madrigal, but was also well-known as a composer of the light and enormously popular canzonas and canzonettas. These four canzonas, all but one lively and brisk, demonstrate the style very well. There are few melodic ideas, but they tumble over one another with exciting effect. Total playing time is about five minutes, but the pieces also succeed at a less breakneck speed!

Six Dances by Melchior Franck

4 SATB. Aufzug I - Pavana - Galliarda - Deutscher Tanz - Couranta - Aufzug II . The German composer Melchior Franck (1579–1639) was a prolific composer of the late Renaissance and early Baroque. Amongst many other works, he wrote no less than 600 motets. The dances of Susato and Praetorius are great, and are often played, but I have arranged six of Franck’s dances as a bit of a change, anticipating that they will be little-known. Total playing time is about eight minutes.

Five Easy Quartets

4 SATB. 1. Out in the Open; 2. Waltz; 3. Duck Day; 4. Song; 5. Jig. In the spring 2013 issue of The Recorder Magazine, Steve Marshall wrote an article entitled "Writing Music for 'Forgotten' Groups". In it, he said that there was a great shortage of music for players of modest ability who want music "they can enjoy playing with friends now or very soon, rather than after some lengthy process of improvement that they are unlikely to ever undertake". These pieces are an attempt to meet that need. "Easy" is of course a relative term, and against Steve's instructions, I have written one piece with TWO sharps in the key signature, and a scattering of (the easier) accidentals throughout. But I hope that if you feel "forgotten" you will enjoy the music!

Songs from the Gartenlieder inc Morning Greeting

4 SATB. These are arrangements of three songs from 'The Gartenlieder', an 1846 collection of seventeen SATB choral songs by Fanny Hensel. Hensel was the sister of Felix Mendelssohn, and they were musically influential on one another. She composed over 500 works, but the vast majority of these still exist only in manuscript. These pieces are not difficult and an interesting introduction to the work of this unjustly neglected composer. English translations of the poems are given in the score.
