Four Easter Choruses

Three Times Four

The opening bars were written on the 2007 Northern Recorder Course at John Hawkes' composition class, comprising Andrew Melville, Monique Pollet, Judith Railton and Berenice Styles. I subsequently extended it in the same vein, and added (entirely optional) big bass parts. The notes are very easy to play, and when they are well-controlled and nicely in tune this becomes a beautiful and atmospheric 4 minutes of music, particularly well suited to a resonant acoustic.

Thrill of the Chase

Steve says: 'I arranged the pieces for the Theddingworth Set for an Easy Recorder Playing for Adults in 2012, a course that took place at Hothorpe Hall, in the village of Theddingworth. The five pieces are all late Renaissance or early Baroque and are by composers from continental Europe. But what unites them most of all is that at modest speeds, they are straightforward to play and still work musically. After mastering them played slowly, they can be played more quickly. Also the range of each part is restricted - no instrument even has to play a three-fingers-pinched note.'

I still enjoy writing such music, so I was delighted to be asked to write some madrigals. My starting-off point was ‘April is in my mistress’ face’ by Thomas Morley, where I reset his marvellously concise poem. Morley’s poem refers to months of the year, so I completed my set with three others poems that concern months or seasons. These poems are unpublished work by my wife Ann Marshall, a friend Caroline Clunies-Ross, and by myself. To make it easier for the madrigals to be performed by recorder ensembles, the alto part is presented as more convenient for treble recorder. Total performance time is about eight minutes.'

Ann says: ‘In 1651 John Playford published a large set of country dance tunes, under the title 'The English Dancing Master'. The publication was a great success, and it was reprinted many times. 'The English Dancing Master' comprised melodies only, and they have been arranged many times over the years. I wrote my five DTrTB arrangements for a session I was conducting at the 2012 Cheltenham Recorder Festival. The arrangements are not difficult, and in any case the tunes work nicely at almost any speed, so I hope that many groups will be able to enjoy playing them. No part reaches beyond 'three fingers pinched', and the bass part never rises above an A – it is hence very suitable for inexperienced bass players. Two Songs

4 SATB. Love Is A Sickness; The Sea Hath Many Thousand Sands. Ann arranged these two songs by Hubert Parry (1848-1918) for a recorder event, and all were very pleasantly surprised. It took quite some time to arrive at playing in the right way for this music - for example, to make enough (but not too much) of the frequent changes in dynamics, both sudden and gradual.

Three Short Anthems

4 SATB. I Will Give Thanks Unto Thee; Lord, Have Mercy Upon Us; Allelujah. Ann arranged these short pieces for an 'easy' session on a course. Purcell's music cannot often be described as 'easy', and so the participants enjoyed the experience of playing music by this giant of English music. Despite the easy notes and the brevity of the pieces, there is much to work on, given a generous number of dynamic markings and some unexpected chords.

Tielman Susato lived from about 1510 to 1570. He was a music publisher and an instrumentalist, but it is as a composer that he is now best known. He wrote many masses and motets, as well as chansons. Susato’s instrumental music is still much-performed today, particularly the dances from a large book often referred to as ‘The Danserye’. My suite comprises dances taken from that volume, and they typify his direct and tuneful style, whether the music is fast or slow, fun or reflective.Ann has chosen the six pieces such that they make a satisfying suite, with a total playing time of about nine minutes

From The English Dancing Master

'The English Dancing Master' was published in 1651, and contained the melodies to accompany 105 dances. The melodies were traditional, and were collected and published by John Playford. I arranged these five dances for the 2012 Easy Recorder Playing for Adults course, and so they are straightforward to play. But they are still great tunes, and even more advanced groups may find them entertaining, especially if they perform them briskly, perhaps with added percussion.
