Four Double Choir Motets

His output was enormous, including much complex multichoir music. Ann has selected four of his more straightforward double choir pieces, but there is still a lot going on in this music, in terms of harmony and interplay between the choirs.

Two Settings of Da Pacem Domine

8 TTBBGbCb opt. SubCb. Da Pacem Nobis 1582 - Da Pacem Nobis 1556. Ann says: 'I made these arrangements for the first season of the Mellow Tones Recorder Orchestra – the eight-foot orchestra set up and conducted by Helen Hooker. For the uninitiated, the smallest instrument included in an eight-foot recorder orchestra is the tenor, and such a group makes a wonderfully mellow sound. I thought that the two settings of Da Pacem Domine by Lassus would give the orchestra an opportunity to play something of great beauty. The total playing time of these settings is four minutes at the marked speeds. but the pieces also work extremely well when played more slowly.'

Four Watercolours of a Country Church

Three Inventions for Double Choir

Short History of the Ruishton Martyr, A

8 SoSATBBGbCb. John Wall (1620-1679) was a priest during the Reformation, when it was illegal to say Mass in Britain. This piece, written for a playing day in Ruishton (near Taunton), is a dramatic musical representation of his life, capture and execution - and all in 5 minutes! The notes are no more than moderately difficult, although the music is in places very atmospheric, and in other places rhythmic and exciting, so some work may be needed to turn on a musical sixpence.

May Hill Rhapsody

8 1S + 7 AATTBGbCb. This pastoral piece contrasts a fairly difficult descant solo with an easy orchestral accompaniment. Once a suitable soloist is found, the piece can be pulled together quickly with a group of only modest technical ability. The May Hill Rhapsody also exists in a version (MHE 10310a) for treble soloist with DDTrTrTB. Total playing time is about 6 minutes.

Three Double Choir Motets

8 SSAATTBB. Three motets written in the late 1500s for very popular forces of the day – double choir. Andrea Gabrieli was Venetian, and Giovanni Croce, born just down the coast from Venice, was greatly influenced by him. Francisco Guerrero was Spanish. This type of music is very often presented in minim beats, but I have used crotchets to make this beautiful (but not difficult) music as widely accessible as possible. This set is also available for two TrTBGtB choirs, as MHE10715a. Total playing time is about nine minutes.
