Magnificat & Nunc Dimittis

4 SATB. This is Steve's arrangement of the beautiful Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis (Short Service) by Orlando Gibbons (1583-1625). Originally in Ab, it is now in the much more recorder-friendly key of G. For groups with the required instruments, playing this piece an octave lower (on tenor, bass, great bass and contrabass) is particularly rewarding. Total playing time is about six minutes.

Lassus (1532-1594) is, along with Palestrina and Victoria, considered to be the most famous and influential musician at the end of the 16th century. He was hugely prolific and versatile. Send Three-and-Fourpence

4 SoABCb. This short (3 minute) piece consists of echoes of short musical phrases. It involves some improvisation, and a lot of listening to one another. It may sound unpromising, but it's fun to play and interesting for the audience. The first performance was given in the course concert at the Recorder Summer School in August 2007, by Andrew Melville, Fiona Sneyd, Berenice Styles and Steve Marshall The title comes from the instruction 'send reinforcements, we're going to advance', which was allegedly misheard as 'send three-and-fourpence, we're going to a dance'.

The quartet also works as a standalone tone poem which moves through several contrasting moods and instrumentations. But this three movement quartet paints some little pictures of a more bustling countryside, including a working farm and a fast-flowing stream. So it's not slow, it's not gentle, and you'll have to decide for yourselves whether it's pretty! This quartet is moderately difficult. Also available (MHE 10503a £7.00) for SnoTrTrB, which seems rather squeaky, but I have heard good reports from groups who have played it in this form!

Chor der Engel

4 TBGbCb. Steve says: Schubert wrote his lovely Chor der Engel (Choir of Angels) in 1816, at the tender age of 19. The piece cries out for significant changes in dynamic, sometimes within a short time, and so it would seem to be unsuited to a recorder ensemble. But, undaunted, I made the arrangement to use at a playing session that was specifically devoted to how recorder ensembles can succeed with music in unlikely idioms. Chor der Engel worked well, especially at eight-foot, and I have continued to conduct it. It goes down well with players and audience alike.
