3 TBB. Steve says: 'I wrote this miniature suite at the request of the trio Polyphonica, to whom it is dedicated. They wanted something jazzy for low instruments, lasting no more than five minutes so, in accordance with the brief, the five tiny pieces in Low-down Blues last precisely five minutes, and it is for tenor and two basses. But it is not easy music! Nevertheless, if you are up to it, I think the suite is exciting, and a bit of a crowd-pleaser!'

3 SAT gemshorns. Steve says: 'This is the original gemshorn version of recorder trio MHE 20208. Performance time is about three minutes. [Margaret Shearing and David Scruby asked me to write a trio sonata for a group which regularly plays such pieces. Among other things the group was keen to have a piece which had an independent cello part. In fact everyone has an equal part in the discussion in my piece, so it could be more accurately called a quartet for two recorders, cello and piano. Still ‘trio sonata’ is a nicely convenient title. 3 SAT. Another piece originally written for the Aries Gemshorn Trio. I tried to write something which sounded somewhat mediaeval, while still being contemporary. The pieces work well on descant, treble and tenor recorders, and I have put them in such a key that bass recorders can also play by doubling the tenors at the octave.
