A Year of Quintets

5 SSATB. An arrangement of the Year of Trios (MHE 20313) written for a descant-rich U3A group. The DDTr parts again use only those five notes, but the tenor and bass parts (though still easy) range across an octave each. Possibly a group who have played the trios could 'graduate' to the quintets, if they can find tenor and bass players. Total playing time is about thirteen minutes.

5 SATBGb. Steve says: "Ann and I wrote 'Gweld chi cyn bo hir' as an end-of-course piece at a yearly event we run in mid-Wales. We used the Welsh title on the course but, much as we like the Welsh language, we thought that publishing it with the title in English would be a little better for sales. The music is of easy-moderate difficulty and includes a great bass part (we had several greats on the course)."

Five Variants for Recorder Quintet

These five pieces are the result of Steve's suggestion to four other composers to take a very short original theme, and write a piece based on that theme, completely independently of one another. All of the pieces would last between two and three minutes and would be for a DTrTTB quintet. They used an 8 bar tune written by Ann Marshall, which ISteve sent to everyone unharmonised so that they could treat the melody exactly as they saw fit. The pieces are fascinatingly different from one another, and they could be performed as a set, without any feeling of repetition. Of moderate difficulty only.

I saw them in concert and, although they all have remarkable individual technique, the highlight of the evening for me was their fantastic ensemble playing. I therefore suggested to the group that I write a slow-moving piece with the emphasis not on high-speed runs, but on the potential for honest-to-goodness gorgeousness. This five-minute piece therefore works out its material in quite a leisurely way; achieving gorgeousness is up to you!'
